WHAT IS IT? ACUTE NERVE ROOT COMPRESSION

  • Compression of the nerve where it exits from the spine

  • Severe sharp pain from the neck which runs down the arm

  • Pain is position dependent

 

Signs and symptoms

  • Increased pain with neck movement (extension, rotation)

  • Eased pain with placing arm in sling position or overhead as well as hitching of shoulder

  • Other symptoms such as pins and needles, numbness, weakness, loss of reflexes

WHAT CAUSES IT?​

  • Remaining in a posture for a sustained period of time

  • Inflammation

  • Bony growth such as an osteophyte

 

HOW TO SELF MANAGE
  • Seek medication under the supervision of a GP or pharmacist

  • Place the affected arm in the most comfortable position possible

  • Avoid the movements of turning the head or looking up at the ceiling

PROGNOSIS

If not improving with conservative management, then referral to a specialist may be necessary.
